“Festivallo” – a lavish celebration of horses
• The new HOP TOP Show at EQUITANA 2013
• Furioso spectacle combining top-class riding and breathtaking show
When Rio's samba dancers suddenly are four-legged instead of two-legged, when the boys from Cologne go in for serious acrobatics rather than jolly kissing, and when the Flying Dutchman becomes a Flying Frenchman, that's the HOP TOP Show! In 2013 it is again a highlight of the Essen EQUITANA. This year's motto: "Festivallo".
Carnival in Rio, Venice and Cologne, the Alpine festival of bringing in the cattle, and Walpurgis Night on the Blocksberg - in March you can experience the folk festivals of the world together in a single location, Hall 6 of the Essen Exhibition Centre. The HOP TOP Show held during EQUITANA - that is the world's best equestrian show at the world's largest equestrian sports fair. And again, all the stars of the scene will be part of it in 2013 - from Lorenzo, aka as the "Flying Frenchman", to Frédéric Pignon, magician of free dressage, all the way through to the show riders of Team Excalibur and many more.
These are some of the items on the programme:
Carnival in Venice: masks, mysteries and a touch of excess. Venetian Carnival in Essen: Oliver Jubin, Ana Ayromlou and the "Avantgarde Horses & Dance" with the stallions from the Marbach. State Stud. The Jubin/Ayromlu duo stands for the dance of humans and horses, for grace and elegance, for perfect choreography. You will be surprised - Essen can also celebrate Carnival!
From Venice the journey goes to Rio de Janeiro. EQUITANA invited Brazilian actors: Mangalarga Marchadores. These gaited horses are one of the world's largest horse populations, but are still rather unknown in Germany. At EQUITANA, the visitors can see them live.
The Cathedral, the Rhine, that's really Cologne. And really Cologne-bred boys are also the actors bringing their traditional Carnival to the Essen Exhibition Centre: former Vaulting World Champion Kai Vorberg with the Team Bleyer of the JRG Cologne and Viva Colonia.
And then there is the Flying Frenchman, Lorenzo with his white horses. He interprets Roman riding in his own way: standing atop two horses that are not hitched together as usual and not wearing bridles. Not only does Lorenzo guide these two horses through the hall and even across obstacles at breathtaking speed, he also has an entire herd around him, directing them like a puppeteer would his puppets.
Talking about Frenchmen - when he was still a little boy Frédéric Pignon already had a passion: observing horses and trying to communicate with them. He has perfected this art. Pignon's show, a combination between circus and playing with his horses is impossible to describe, it simply has to be seen..
The same goes for Showteam Excalibur, albeit in quite a different way. The riders transform the Hall 6 into a witches' cauldron - quite literally, since they bring Walpurgis Night to Essen and promise to play with fire. Altogether, this HOP TOP Show will be something very special, a total work of art combining horsemanship, light and sound effects, all brought together in one great narrative.
In 2011 the show was completely sold out. Reason enough to secure a ticket in good time by booking in advance.
